The idea of “personal user manual” is to provide some essential information about working with you so that you shorten the time that people learn about you (also, there are some topics which rarely surface in normal discussions, so it is better to express them directly like this).
Tomek’s Manual
I’ve experimented with the idea few years ago, but now I decided to give it another try. So here it is: my personal user manual. It consists of few parts:
- communication,
- 1-on-1s, feedback,
- working hours & meetings,
- how to help me,
- and – last but not least – what I value.
I’ve published it on my blog and on @Allegro intranet. The doc is open for comments and you are welcomed to add them.
The Future
I plan to update it regularly (but not very often, as I don’t expect rapid changes in the way I work and in the values I follow). I also plan to blog about my experiences with how my user manual was received by people I start working with. Well, I’m curious myself what will happen. 🙂
Just Do It
On the internet, you will find many examples of user manuals written by some top engineers / C-level guys etc. (see here) With this amount of inspiration, why don’t you write your own? 🙂
